CAS No. 616-38-6 Purity 99.9% Dimethyl Carbonate / DMC Solvent

Dimethyl carbonate (DMC), is a kind of important intermediates  organic synthesis, molecular structure contains carbonyl, methyl and  armour, such as oxygen functional group, has a variety of reaction performance in the production safety, convenient, have use less pollution, easy to transport all those characteristics. Due to the lower toxicity dimethyl carbonate, is a potential "green" chemical product.
In the United States, dimethyl carbonate was exempted by the EPA in 2009 from the definition of a volatile organic compound (VOC). Due to being classified as exempt from volatile organic compounds, dimethyl carbonate has grown in popularity as an alternative to methyl ethyl ketone (MEK) and p-chlorobenzotrifluoride, as well as t-butyl acetate, before it was also exempted and application. Dimethyl carbonate has an ester-like or alcohol-like odor and is more user-friendly than most hydrocarbon solvents it replaces. Dimethyl carbonate has an evaporation rate of 3.22 (butyl acetate = 1.0), which is slightly slower than MEK (3.8) and ethyl acetate (4.1), but faster than toluene (2.0) and isopropanol (1.7). The solubility of dimethyl carbonate is similar to that of common glycol ethers, which means that dimethyl carbonate can dissolve most common coating resins, with the possible exception of rubber-based resins. The Hildebrand solubility parameter is 20.3 MPa and the Hansen solubility parameter is: dispersibility = 15.5, polarity = 3.9, H-bond = 9.7. Dimethyl carbonate is partially soluble in water up to 13%, however, it will hydrolyze to methanol and carbon dioxide over time in water-based systems unless properly buffered. Dimethyl carbonate can freeze at the same temperature as water, and it can be thawed without loss of properties, either by itself or a coating based on dimethyl carbonate.

    Dimethyl Carbonate - Preparation Method

    1. Transesterification method Dimethyl carbonate can be obtained by transesterification reaction between ethylene carbonate or propylene carbonate and methanol. This method has high yield, low equipment corrosion and mild reaction conditions, but the source of raw materials is restricted by the development of petrochemical industry and the utilization rate of elements is low.
    2. Oxidative carbonylation method Methanol, carbon monoxide and oxygen directly synthesize dimethyl carbonate under the action of a catalyst. This method has cheap and easy-to-obtain raw materials, low toxicity and simple process, and is the most promising method. According to the classification of process conditions, it can be divided into liquid phase method and gas phase method, and gas phase method can be divided into one-step method and two-step method. Among them, methanol liquid-phase oxidative carbonylation method and gas-phase oxidative carbonylation two-step method have been industrialized, while methanol gas-phase oxidative carbonylation one-step method is still under development.
    3. Methanol and CO2 reaction synthesis method
    4. Methanol and urea reaction synthesis method

Dimethyl carbonate (DMC) is a versatile chemical compound with various applications. Here are some common uses of dimethyl carbonate:

    1. Solvent: DMC is widely used as a solvent in various industries, including paint, coatings, adhesives, and electronics. It can dissolve many organic substances and has a low toxicity compared to other solvents.

    2. Chemical Intermediate: Dimethyl carbonate serves as a raw material in the synthesis of other chemicals. It can be used to produce polycarbonates, polyurethanes, and several pharmaceuticals.

    3. Fuel Additive: DMC can be used as an additive in gasoline and diesel fuels to improve their combustion efficiency and reduce emissions. It has oxygenating properties that enhance the fuel's octane rating and reduce carbon monoxide and particulate matter emissions.

    4. Lithium-ion Batteries: Dimethyl carbonate is used as an electrolyte solvent in lithium-ion batteries, a popular energy storage technology. It improves the battery's performance and safety by providing efficient ion transport and stable electrolyte properties.

    5. Pesticides and Herbicides: DMC is utilized as an active ingredient or solvent in the formulation of certain pesticides and herbicides. It helps to dissolve and deliver the active components to the target plants or pests.

These are just a few examples of dimethyl carbonate applications. Its versatility makes it valuable in various industries, particularly as a solvent and chemical intermediate.
