      Product Detail

Perlite, in its naturally occurring form, is a dense, amorphous, hydrated volcanic glass, generally of rhyolitic composition (sodium potassium aluminum silicate). Because of its commercial applications, perlite has a dual nomenclature in the industry. It is known by the same name as both the naturally occurring rock and, after processing and thermal expansion, as the lightweight aggregate

PERLITE is non-flammable and non-combustible. Mostly chemically inert. Soluble in hot concentrated alkali and HF. Moderately soluble (<10%) in 1 molar NaOH. Slightly soluble in dilute strong acids . Very slightly soluble in water or weak acids. No chemical incompatibilities reported. When heated to a sufficiently high temperature, it expands to between four and twenty times its original volume as its 2-6% by weight of loosely bound water boils away. When quickly heated to above 1600 degrees F, pops like popcorn as its water vaporizes. Expanded perlite is a fluffy, white particulate.
