Dimethylformamide (DMF) is a transparent liquid that is miscible with water and most organic solvents. It is a commonly used solvent in chemical reactions. Pure dimethylformamide has no odor, but industrial grade or spoiled dimethylformamide has a fishy odor due to its impure content of dimethylamine. The name comes from the fact that it is a dimethyl substitute of formamide (formamide), and both methyl groups are located on the N (nitrogen) atom. Dimethylformamide is a highly boiling polar (hydrophilic) non proton solvent that can promote the progress of SN2 reaction mechanism. Dimethylformamide is manufactured using formic acid and dimethylamine. Dimethylformamide is unstable in the presence of strong bases such as sodium hydroxide or strong acids such as hydrochloric acid or sulfuric acid (especially at high temperatures), and hydrolyzes into formic acid and dimethylamine.

The explosion limit of a mixture of steam and air is 2.2-15.2%. Mix with water and usual organic solvents, and mix with petroleum ether for layering. Exposure to open flames and high heat can cause combustion and explosion. It can react violently with concentrated sulfuric acid and fuming nitric acid, and even cause explosions. Hazard Mark 7 (flammable liquid) is mainly used as an industrial solvent, in the pharmaceutical industry for the production of vitamins, hormones, and also for the manufacture of imidacloprid.
