    Bioactivity of hydroxypropyl methyl cellulose
    Description Hypromellose is a water-soluble hydrophilic nonionic cellulose ether used to form a swelling soluble matrix.

    In vitro studies, hydroxypropyl methylcellulose releases drugs in a controlled manner, effectively prolonging the duration of drug release and thus prolonging its therapeutic effect [1]. Hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (hydroxypropyl methylcellulose) has been used in sustained-release pharmaceutical products for many years. When used in matrix tablets, these polymers hydrate when in contact with water, creating a viscous gel barrier in and around the tablet. Properties that affect the rate of drug release include the rate of water diffusion into the dry polymer, the rate of hydration and gel formation of HCG, the viscosity of HCG hydrate, and the rate of HCG gel erosion [2].
    In vivo studies of lacrimal occlusion using 2% hydroxypropyl methylcellulose are a low-cost and safe additional treatment for dry eye. Fluorescein and rose red staining tests showed a significant reduction in physical signs after treatment with hydroxypropyl methylcellulose [3]. Hydroxypropyl methancellulose effectively improved blood glucose metabolism and inhibited oxidative stress in mice fed a high-fat diet. The anti-hyperglycemic and antioxidant effects of hydroxypropyl methylcellulose can be partially attributed to the regulation of hepatic glucose-regulating enzyme activity and the activation of antioxidant enzymes in liver and red blood cells. Hydroxypropyl methylcellulose can be used as a biomaterial in the development of functional foods or as a therapeutic agent against high-fat induced hyperglycemia and oxidative stress [4].
