      Product Detail

A polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon with the molecular formula C13H10. white flaky crystals, fluorescent when impure, with a characteristic aromatic odor similar to naphthalene. Found in automobile exhaust, cornhusks, and the high boiling fraction of coal tar. Combustible. Insoluble in water, soluble in benzene, carbon disulfide, ethanol and ether. Fluorene can be synthesized industrially and used as a precursor for cathartic dyes, plastics, and insecticides. From it can be synthesized 9-fluorenone, 9-fluorenemethanol and trinitrofluorenone (for electrostatic copying) and other chemicals. Polyfluorene is used as a light emitter in organic light emitting diodes. The 9-position proton of fluorene is acidic, with a pKa of 22.6 (DMSO), and can be removed by a base (e.g., sodium hydroxide) to form an orange-yellow aromatic anion. This anion can be used as a nucleophilic reagent for substitution reactions with electrophilic reagents at the 9-position. The fluorene derivative 9-fluorenylmethyl chloroformate (Fmoc-Cl) is used in peptide synthesis to give a Fmoc protecting group to the amino group.
