Zirconium oxychloride, also widely named zirconyl chloride (ZOC), is an essential water-soluble zirconium intermediate with CAS No. 13520-92-8 for octahydrate ZrOCl₂·8H₂O. It appears as white or slightly yellow silky acicular crystals and is highly hygroscopic. Its aqueous solution shows weak acidity. It dissolves readily in water, methanol and ethanol, slightly soluble in concentrated hydrochloric acid and insoluble in most organic solvents.
ZOC is the primary precursor for manufacturing high-purity zirconia (ZrO₂), nano zirconia, basic zirconium carbonate, zirconium sulfate and other downstream zirconium chemical products. It is widely adopted in advanced ceramics, refractory materials, textile mordant, leather tanning, paint driers, catalyst synthesis, wastewater treatment and oilfield chemical additives.
Our industrial grade zirconium oxychloride features stable Zr(Hf)O₂ ≥36.0% and strictly controlled trace impurities including iron, silicon, sodium and titanium. Custom low-impurity grades for high-end ceramic and electronic material projects are available upon request.
For shipment, zirconium oxychloride is classified as corrosive solid UN1759. Standard packaging is 25kg woven bag with PE inner liner or 1MT jumbo bag. It should be stored in sealed, cool and dry warehouse and kept separated from alkaline substances. This material is not dual-use controlled item for export. We provide stable bulk supply, full TDS, MSDS and test certificates for global customers.

    SECTION 4: First aid measures

4.1 Description of first aid measures
    • Inhalation: Remove victim to fresh air. If coughing or breathing difficulty occurs, get immediate medical attention.
    • Skin contact: Immediately remove contaminated clothing. Rinse skin with plenty of running water for at least 15 minutes. Seek urgent medical help.
    • Eye contact: Flush eyes continuously with clean running water for minimum 15 minutes, keep eyelids open. Call doctor immediately.
    • Ingestion: Rinse mouth. Do NOT induce vomiting. Give water if victim is conscious. Seek immediate medical treatment.
4.2 Most important symptoms and effects

Corrosive. Causes severe burns to skin, eyes and mucous membranes. Dust irritates respiratory tract.
4.3 Indication of immediate medical attention

    Treat burns symptomatically.

    SECTION 5: Fire-fighting measures

5.1 Suitable extinguishing media: Water spray, foam, dry chemical powder, CO₂.

    5.2 Unsuitable: None specific.

5.3 Special hazards arising from the substance

Non-combustible solid. At high temperature decomposition releases corrosive hydrogen chloride (HCl) fumes and zirconium oxide dust.

    5.4 Advice for firefighters

Wear full fire resistant protective suit and self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA). Cool containers with water spray. Prevent contaminated fire runoff entering drains or waterways.

    SECTION 6: Accidental release measures

6.1 Personal precautions, protective equipment and emergency procedures

Evacuate non-essential personnel. Avoid dust formation. Wear full PPE including face shield, acid resistant gloves and P3 dust respirator.
    6.2 Environmental precautions

Prevent spill entering sewer, surface water and soil. Acidic solution may harm aquatic organisms.
    6.3 Containment and cleaning up

Small spill: Carefully collect dry powder with inert non-reactive absorbent (sand). Transfer into closed labelled plastic container. Rinse residual area with large amount of water, neutralise runoff with mild alkali such as sodium bicarbonate.

    Do not discharge untreated waste.
    6.4 Reference to other sections

See Section 8 (Exposure controls) and Section13 (Disposal).

    SECTION 7: Handling and storage

    7.1 Precautions for safe handling

Minimise dust generation. Use local exhaust ventilation. Avoid skin and eye contact. Do not inhale dust. Wash hands thoroughly after handling.
    7.2 Conditions for safe storage

Store in tightly sealed HDPE or plastic-lined drum, cool, dry and well ventilated warehouse. Protect from moisture (hygroscopic). Separate from strong bases, active metals.
