    Description

Oseltamivir is an antiviral medication used to treat influenza A and influenza B (flu), and to prevent flu after exposure. The medication is taken orally. The Infectious Disease Society of America, the United States' Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and the United Kingdom's National Institute for Health and Care Excellence recommend the use of oseltamavir for people who have complications or are at high risk for complications who present within 48 hours of first symptoms of infection. They recommend its use to prevent infection in at-risk people but not the general population. The CDC recommends that clinicians use their discretion to treat those at lower risk who present within 48 hours of first symptoms of infection.

    Oseltamivir phosphate More Info

    1. General Information

Oseltamivir phosphate is a well - known antiviral drug. Chemically, it is an ethyl ester prodrug of oseltamivir carboxylate. The molecular formula of oseltamivir phosphate is C₁₆H₂₈N₂O₄·H₃PO₄.

    2. Mechanism of Action

It works by inhibiting the neuraminidase enzyme. Neuraminidase is a glycoprotein found on the surface of influenza virus particles. This enzyme is crucial for the release and spread of newly - formed virus particles from infected cells. By inhibiting neuraminidase, oseltamivir phosphate prevents the virus from budding off from the host cell and spreading to other cells in the body. As a result, it can reduce the severity and duration of influenza virus infections.

    3. Pharmacokinetics

Absorption: Oseltamivir phosphate is well - absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract after oral administration. The prodrug is rapidly hydrolyzed in the liver and intestine to its active form, oseltamivir carboxylate.

Distribution: It is distributed widely throughout the body, reaching tissues and fluids where the virus may be replicating.

Metabolism: The metabolism mainly occurs in the liver through ester hydrolysis.

Excretion: The drug and its metabolites are mainly excreted through the kidneys.

    4. Indications

It is primarily used for the treatment and prophylaxis (prevention) of influenza A and influenza B virus infections. When used for treatment, it is most effective if started within 48 hours after the onset of influenza symptoms. For prophylaxis, it can be given to individuals who have been exposed to the influenza virus to reduce the likelihood of developing the disease.

    5. Dosage and Administration

Dosage varies depending on the age and purpose (treatment or prophylaxis). For example, in adults for treatment of influenza, the typical dose is 75 mg twice a day for 5 days. For prophylaxis, the dose may be 75 mg once a day. It is usually administered orally in the form of capsules or oral suspension.

    6. Side Effects

Common side effects include nausea, vomiting, headache, and pain. Some patients may also experience diarrhea or bronchitis - like symptoms. In rare cases, more severe side effects such as skin rashes, allergic reactions, and abnormal liver function tests may occur.

    7. Precautions and Contraindications

Precautions need to be taken in patients with renal impairment, as the drug's excretion may be affected. It should be used with caution in individuals with a history of allergic reactions to the drug or its components. Contraindications may include known hypersensitivity to oseltamivir phosphate.
