3. Isopentane, also known as 2-methylbutane, is simply CH3-CH(CH3)-CH2-CH3. Molecular weight 72.15. Colorless flammable liquid. It's scented. Melting point -159.9ºC, boiling point 27.8ºC, relative density 0.6201, refractive index 1.3537. Insoluble in water, slightly soluble in ethanol, soluble in hydrocarbon and ether.Isopentane is a colorless flammable liquid. Extremely flammable, its vapor and air can form explosive mixtures. In case of open fire and high heat, it is easy to burn and explode. It can react strongly with oxidants and even cause combustion. Its vapor is heavier than air, can spread to a considerable distance at a low point, and will lead to a return fire in case of open fire. In case of high heat, the pressure inside the container increases, and there is a risk of cracking and explosion.

Uses:

Preparation:

There are two main ways to prepare isopentane

Leakage emergency treatment
