Explosive when mixed with air

Stable. Extremely flammable. Incompatible with strong oxidizing agents. Vapour-air mixtures explosive in certain proportions. Incompatible with rubber, various plastics. The vapour, being heavier than air, may roll over surfaces and collect in low points. Note low flash point.

Isopentane Use and Manufacturing

Methods of Manufacturing

Separated from petroleum cracked products or platinum reformed oil. Industrial-grade 2-methylbutane contains impurities such as alkane, naphthene, unsaturated hydrocarbons and moisture with similar boiling points. Unsaturated hydrocarbons are washed and removed with concentrated sulfuric acid; water is removed with dehydrating agents such as anhydrous calcium chloride, phosphorus pentoxide or metallic sodium, or molecular sieve dehydration can also be used; and finally fractionated and refined, and the distillate is purified by high temperature activated silica gel adsorption column Remove traces of linear hydrocarbon impurities. Using pentane as a raw material and catalytic isomerization in a liquid phase at 95°C, 2-methylbutane can be obtained.

Uses

It can be used as solvent for catalyst in polyethylene production, foaming agent for expandable polystyrene, foaming agent for polyurethane foam system, deasphalting solvent, etc.
