    Neodymium Fluoride

Meta Title: Neodymium Fluoride NdF₃ CAS 13709‑42‑7 | Rare‑Earth Fluoride Properties & Applications

Meta Description: Neodymium fluoride (NdF₃) CAS 13709‑42‑7 is high‑purity rare‑earth fluoride powder. Grades 3N‑5N for metal smelting, Nd‑Fe‑B magnet raw material, optical coating and ceramic industry.
    H1:Neodymium Fluoride (Neodymium(III) Fluoride) CAS 13709‑42‑7

    Overview

Neodymium fluoride, also named neodymium(III) fluoride, is an important inorganic rare‑earth fluoride compound with the chemical formula NdF₃ and CAS registry number 13709‑42‑7. It presents as light purple or pale pink crystalline powder. Neodymium fluoride features high melting point, excellent chemical stability and low volatility. It is a critical raw material for rare‑earth metal electrolysis. Multiple commercial purity grades ranging from 99.9% (3N) to 99.999% (5N) are supplied for industrial manufacturing and laboratory research.

    Physical and Chemical Properties

Neodymium fluoride has extremely low solubility in water. It is insoluble in dilute acids but soluble in hot concentrated mineral acids. The material possesses outstanding thermal stability and does not decompose easily under high‑temperature atmosphere. Its high melting property makes it perfectly suitable for molten‑salt electrolysis production of neodymium metal.
Under normal ambient conditions, neodymium fluoride is chemically stable. It is slightly hygroscopic; long‑term exposure to humid air may cause minor surface hydration and powder caking.

    Production Process

Commercial neodymium fluoride is mostly manufactured via hydrofluoric acid precipitation method. Neodymium salt aqueous solution reacts with hydrofluoric acid under controlled temperature and pH parameters. After precipitation, filtration, thorough washing and high‑temperature dehydration calcination, anhydrous neodymium fluoride powder is obtained. This mature industrial process effectively controls impurity levels and delivers stable particle‑size distribution for mass‑scale production.

    Key Applications

    1. Raw Material for Neodymium Metal Production

Neodymium fluoride is the primary feedstock for electrolytic preparation of neodymium metal. The produced neodymium metal is an essential component for high‑performance Nd‑Fe‑B permanent magnets widely used in new‑energy vehicles, wind turbines and electronic motors.
    2. Optical Coating Material

Thanks to its good optical transmittance in infrared range, neodymium fluoride is applied as optical coating layer for infrared‑optics components, optical lenses and laser‑related optical devices.
    3. Special Ceramic & Glass Additive

It works as color‑adjusting additive for special glass and advanced ceramics, modifying optical performance and improving material mechanical properties.
    4. Alloy and Advanced Material Precursor

Used for preparing rare‑earth‑containing alloys, functional composites and some special‑purpose sintered materials.

    Storage & Handling

Store neodymium fluoride in tightly sealed containers inside cool, dry and well‑ventilated warehouse. Keep away from moisture, humid atmosphere and high‑temperature environment to avoid powder agglomeration.
When handling the powder, prevent dust inhalation, skin and eye contact. Operators shall wear dust‑resistant mask, safety goggles and chemical‑resistant gloves. Local exhaust ventilation is recommended at dust‑generating positions. Dispose waste residues complying with local environmental protection regulations.

    Available Grades & Packaging

    ‑ Purity: 99.9%, 99.99%, 99.999% (3N / 4N / 5N), calculated on TREO basis

‑ Package: PE inner liner bag + PP woven outer bag; 25 kg drum or jumbo FIBC bag available upon customer request.
