On hydrolysis, pentachloroethane produces dichloroacetic acid and the reaction with alkalis and metals produces chloroacetylenes, which becomes spontaneously explosive. Pentachloroethane is a colourless stable liquid with a camphor-like smell and non-flammable. Pentachloroethane is incompatible with strong oxidising age
