Description	Linuron is a selective, pre-emergence and post-emergence herbicide, with the chemical name N'-(3,4-dichlorophenyl)-N-methoxy-N-methylurea. It appears as white crystalline solid or powder, odorless, and is very slightly soluble in water. Linuron is used to control annual and perennial broadleaf and grassy weeds on both crop and non-crop sites. It works by inhibiting photosynthesis in target weed plants. It is effective on a wide variety of food crops, including soybean, cotton, potato, corn, bean, pea, winter wheat, asparagus, carrot, and fruit crops. It is also used for control of annual weeds in storehouses, roadsides, fence rows and other noncrop lands. Linuron is often used in formulations with other herbicides, insecticides and fungicides. Linuron is a systemic herbicide, absorbed principally by the roots but also by the foliage, with translocation primarily acropetally in the xylem. Its mode of action is to inhibit photosynthesis and ATP formation by blocking electron transport. It binds to the QB-binding niche on the D1 protein of the photosystem II complex in chloroplast thylakoid membranes, thus blocking electron transport from QA to QB, which stops CO2 fixation and production of ATP and NADPH2 required for plant growth. Linuron is classified by the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) as a Restricted Use Pesticide (RUP). It is slightly toxic, belonging to EPA toxicity class III, and is a General Use Pesticide (GUP). Labels for products containing linuron must bear the Signal Word CAUTION. In terms of toxicity, Linuron is low to moderately toxic by ingestion, with an LD50 varying with experimental animals. For example, the LD50 oral for rats is 1146 mg/kg, and for mice is 2400 mg/kg.
