DL-methionine forms white flaky crystals or crystalline powder from alcohols. It is slightly sweet and has a distinctive smell. It is non-rotatory. It is soluble in water, dilute acids and dilute bases, slightly soluble in 95% alcohol, and insoluble in ether.

Purpose

DL-methionine can be used as a nutritional supplement. It has the same physiological effect as L-type methionine, but is cheaper (L-type is produced from DL-type). Therefore, DL-methionine is generally used in chemical preparations. It is used in plant-based foods such as oats, rye, rice, corn, wheat, peanut powder, soybeans, potatoes, and spinach to improve the balance of amino acids.

It is applicable for the prevention and treatment of liver diseases and poisoning caused by arsenic or benzene, and can also be used to treat malnutrition resulting from protein deficiency after dysentery and chronic infectious diseases. DL-methionine is a feed nutrient enhancer. When livestock and poultry lack methionine, it can lead to stunted growth, weight loss, weakened liver and kidney functions, muscle atrophy, and deterioration of fur quality. Adding 1kg of methionine to the feed is equivalent to the nutritional value of 50kg of fish meal. The general addition rate of methionine in feed is 0.05% to 0.2%.

The content of methionine in the product is ≥ 98.5%, which is one of the essential amino acids for the growth of livestock and poultry. It is the "framework" amino acid for the biosynthesis of proteins and has a strong regulatory effect on the metabolism of animals. It is widely used in the fields of medicine, food, feed and cosmetics. In medicine, it can be used as the main component of amino acid infusions and compound amino acids, and can also be used for the synthesis of medicinal vitamins. By taking advantage of its anti-fatty liver effect, it can be used in liver-protecting preparations for animal production. In food, it is used for amino acid fortification of food and processing of food health supplements. It can be used as a nutritional supplement. Due to its special odor, it is only used in fish cake products. In the feed industry, the usage of methionine is the largest. It is used as a nutritional enhancer for feed, as a feed additive to compensate for the balance of amino acids, and among the varieties of amino acid nutritional feed additives, methionine accounts for 60%, lysine accounts for 30%, and other amino acids account for about 10%.
