Its relative density is 1.119-1.123, refractive index is 1.5710-1.5750, boiling point is 246-248℃, melting point is 1-2.5℃, flash point is above 100℃, slightly soluble in water, miscible in alcohol, ether, soluble in glycerin, miscible with oily fragrances, acid value is less than 6.0. 4-Methoxybenzaldehyde has a clear anise aroma, which is strong and long-lasting.
p-Methoxybenzaldehyde has a characteristic hawthorne odor and a pungent, anise-like flavor. It has a bitter flavor above 30 - 40 ppm. May be prepared by methylation and oxidation of p-cresol and also by oxidation of anethole.
