Urea is a highly concentrated nitrogen fertilizer and an important organic chemical raw material. It is the most widely used nitrogen fertilizer in the world due to its high nitrogen content, good physical properties, and excellent compatibility with other fertilizers.

    2. Key Features & Advantages

    • High Nitrogen Content: With a nitrogen content of up to 46%, it is the solid nitrogen fertilizer with the highest nitrogen content, effectively reducing transportation and application costs.
    • Good Physical Properties: White crystal with high purity, low moisture absorption, and easy storage and application.
    • Wide Adaptability: Suitable for various soil types and crops, and can be used as base fertilizer, topdressing, or foliar fertilizer.
    • Environmentally Friendly: After application, it decomposes into ammonium nitrogen and carbon dioxide, which are easily absorbed by plants without harmful residues.
    • Cost-Effective: Compared with other nitrogen fertilizers, it provides higher nitrogen input per unit cost.

    3. Main Applications

    3.1 Agricultural Applications

    • Nitrogen Fertilizer: The primary use of urea is as a nitrogen fertilizer to promote plant growth, increase crop yield, and improve crop quality. It is suitable for a wide range of crops including rice, wheat, corn, cotton, vegetables, and fruit trees.
    • Slow-Release Fertilizer: Can be processed into slow-release or controlled-release urea to extend the fertilizer effect period and improve nitrogen utilization efficiency.
    • Foliar Fertilizer: Diluted with water and sprayed on crop leaves to quickly supplement nitrogen and alleviate nutrient deficiency symptoms.

    3.2 Industrial Applications

    • Chemical Raw Material: Used in the production of urea-formaldehyde resin, melamine, plastics, adhesives, and other chemical products.
    • Textile Industry: Used as a finishing agent to improve the softness and wrinkle resistance of textiles.
    • Cosmetics & Personal Care: Used as a moisturizing agent in skincare products and hair care products.
    • Pharmaceuticals: Used in the production of certain pharmaceuticals and medical products.
    • Automotive Industry: Used in the production of automotive urea solution (AdBlue) for selective catalytic reduction (SCR) systems to reduce nitrogen oxide emissions from diesel engines.

    4. Technical Specifications

    Reactivity Profile:

UREA is a weak base. Reacts with hypochlorites to form nitrogen trichloride which explodes spontaneously in air [J. Am. Chem. Soc. 63:3530-32]. Same is true for phosphorus pentachloride. It reacts with azo and diazo compounds to generate toxic gases. Reacts with strong reducing agents to form flammable gases (hydrogen). The heating of improper stoichiometric amounts of urea and sodium nitrite lead to an explosion. Heated mixtures of oxalic acid and urea yielded rapid evolution of gases, carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide and ammonia (if hot, can be explosive). Titanium tetrachloride and urea slowly formed a complex during 6 weeks at 80° C, decomposed violently at 90 C, [Chem. Abs., 1966, 64, 9219b]. Urea ignites spontaneously on stirring with nitrosyl perchlorate due to the formation of the diazonium perchlorate. Oxalic acid and urea react at high temperatures to form toxic and flammable ammonia and carbon monoxide gases, and inert CO2 gas [Von Bentzinger, R. et al., Praxis Naturwiss. Chem., 1987, 36(8), 41-42].
