Magnesium stearate is a white, loose powder, odorless and tasteless, fine and without a gritty feel, with a light, characteristic aroma. It is a fatty acid salt-type anionic surfactant, appearing as a white, fine powder with a slightly characteristic odor and a slippery feel. It is soluble in hot aliphatic hydrocarbons, hot aromatic hydrocarbons, and hot oils, but insoluble in alcohols and water. It decomposes in strong acids into stearic acid and the corresponding magnesium salt. Magnesium stearate has good adhesion and lubrication properties to the skin, and is used in cosmetics for powder products to improve adhesion and lubrication. Magnesium stearate can be used as a heat stabilizer for polyvinyl chloride (PVC), with stabilizing effects similar to calcium stearate. It can be used in combination with zinc or calcium soaps in food packaging materials, but its application is not widespread. Magnesium stearate can also be used as a mold release agent for plastic products, a raw material for cosmetic powders and moisturizing ointments, a powder mold release agent for pharmaceutical tablets, and a semi-transparent matting agent for paints. Magnesium stearate can be produced in the laboratory by metathesis reaction of sodium stearate and magnesium sulfate, or it can be refined by combining a mixture of food-grade solid organic acids (stearic acid and palmitic acid) with magnesium oxide.
