Detailed Description of Aluminum Sulfate Product

    I. Basic Overview of the Product
Shop Aluminum sulfate, white granules, white powder, iron-free aluminum sulfate, industrial aluminum sulfate, water treatment aluminum sulfate-Detailed Image 1
Aluminum sulfate (chemical formula: Al₂(SO₄)₃) is a classic inorganic sulfate. At room temperature, its most stable form is the octadecahydrate (Al₂(SO₄)₃·18H₂O), which appears as glossy, colorless granular or powdery crystals. Industrial-grade products may be white or slightly gray due to small amounts of impurities, and some may have a slight yellowish surface due to ferrous sulfate impurities. It is odorless, has a astringent taste, and its aqueous solution is acidic. This product is easily soluble in water, acids, and alkalis, but insoluble in alcohols. It starts to decompose when heated to 770°C. When stored in the air for a long time, it is prone to moisture absorption and caking. After hydrolysis, it can form basic salts and colloidal precipitates of aluminum hydroxide. It is a widely used inorganic chemical raw material, finding applications in multiple industrial fields such as water treatment, papermaking, textiles, and fire protection. It has multiple functions including flocculation, color fixation, and sizing, with outstanding cost performance, making it a commonly used additive in industrial production.

    II. Product Application Characteristics

    (1) Core Applications

The applications of aluminum sulfate cover multiple industrial fields, among which papermaking and water treatment are its two main application scenarios, accounting for approximately 90% of the global total output. The specific applications are as follows:

    1. Water treatment field: As a high-efficiency flocculant, it is widely used in drinking water purification, industrial wastewater treatment, and urban sewage treatment. It can remove suspended solids, colloids, color, and some harmful impurities in water. At the same time, it can effectively remove phosphorus and fluorine to prevent water eutrophication. It is especially suitable for treating high-turbidity wastewater from papermaking, printing, and dyeing industries, with a COD removal rate of over 60%. Products with an arsenic content not exceeding 5mg/kg can be specially used as flocculants in water treatment. The treated water quality can meet relevant discharge standards, and the cost is lower than that of similar flocculants (such as PAC), making it suitable for large-scale applications.

    3. Papermaking industry: As a core additive, it accounts for about 40% of the global aluminum sulfate consumption, mainly used as a sizing agent, filler retention agent, and pH regulator. When used in conjunction with rosin, it can significantly improve the water resistance of paper and prevent ink penetration. It can adsorb fine fibers and fillers such as calcium carbonate in the pulp, improve filler retention rate, reduce pulp loss, and at the same time enhance the strength and uniformity of paper. It controls the acidic environment of the pulp to ensure stable sizing effect, and is suitable for the production of various types of paper.
    4. Shop Aluminum sulfate, white granules, white powder, iron-free aluminum sulfate, industrial aluminum sulfate, water treatment aluminum sulfate-Detailed Image 3
    5. Textile and dyeing field: It is commonly used as a mordant and dyeing assistant. Aluminum ions can combine with dye molecules to form complexes, helping the dye to firmly adhere to natural fibers such as cotton and linen, enhancing the color fastness and brightness of the fabric, and reducing fading. It can also adjust the pH value of the dye bath, optimize the dyeing effect, reduce the difficulty of treating printing and dyeing wastewater, and can be used for decolorization of printing and dyeing wastewater to improve the biodegradability of the wastewater.
    6. Shop Aluminum sulfate, white granules, white powder, iron-free aluminum sulfate, industrial aluminum sulfate, water treatment aluminum sulfate-Detailed Image 4

    7. Other fields: In the fire protection industry, it is combined with baking soda and foaming agents to form foam fire extinguishing agents. In the pharmaceutical field, it can be used as a raw material for some drugs. In cosmetics, it is used as an antiperspirant (astringent). It can also be used as a cross-linking agent for animal glue, a curing agent for urea-formaldehyde adhesives, in the manufacture of alum, aluminum white, artificial gems, and high-grade ammonium alum. Additionally, it can be used as a petroleum decolorizing and deodorizing agent, wood preservative, tanning agent, and analytical reagent, with extremely diverse uses.

    (2) Product Characteristics

    • Physical characteristics: The appearance is divided into crystalline (blocky, granular) and powdery forms. The crystals are sharp-angled and white, while the powder is a fine white powder. The density is 1.69g/mL (at 25℃), the bulk density is 0.6 - 0.9g/cm³, the melting point is 86.5℃, and the D50 value of the particle size distribution is 80 - 120μm. In low-temperature environments, solubility decreases, and it tends to form hard lumps, requiring vigorous stirring to dissolve completely. At 25℃, the complete dissolution time is ≤15min.

    • Chemical characteristics: It has the typical properties of inorganic sulfates. Its aqueous solution is acidic (1% aqueous solution has a pH value of 2.5-4.0). It is easily hydrolyzed to form colloidal precipitates of aluminum hydroxide, and the hydrolysis effect is greatly affected by water temperature. The applicable water temperature is 20-40°C, and the effect decreases significantly when the temperature is below 10°C. It can combine with salts of potassium, sodium, and ammonium to form alum compounds. It can decompose when heated, with a dehydration weight loss of ≤5% at 110°C and a burning residue of ≤0.1% at 800°C. It is insoluble in alcohols, can react with acids and alkalis, has good stability, and can be used for a long time without deterioration if stored properly.

    • Usage characteristics: It is easy to use and can be directly dissolved and dosed (the dosage needs to be adjusted according to water quality). It has a fast flocculation speed, stable treatment effect, and strong adaptability to water quality. There is no secondary pollution, and the residual aluminum ion content in the treated water meets national standards (≤0.05mg/L). It is low in cost and has higher cost performance compared with new flocculants such as polyaluminum chloride, making it suitable for large-scale industrial applications. However, the effective pH range of water is narrow (between 5.5 and 8), and the pH value needs to be adjusted according to the raw water hardness to achieve the best effect. The applicable pH value for soft water is 5.5-6.6, for medium-hard water is 6.6-7.2, and for high-hard water is 7.2-7.8.

    • Safety characteristics: It is non-toxic itself but has certain corrosiveness. Contact with skin and mucous membranes will cause irritation, so protective equipment must be worn during operation. It must not be in direct contact with food and medicine (except food-grade aluminum sulfate). It needs to be stored in a sealed and moisture-proof manner, away from fire sources, heat sources, and alkaline substances to avoid moisture absorption, caking, and chemical reactions. Waste disposal must comply with environmental protection standards and must not be dumped at will to prevent pollution of water bodies and soil.
