Description

α-Arbutin belongs to the hydroquinone glycoside class of compounds, with the chemical name 4-hydroxyphenyl-D-glucopyranoside. Present in plants such as bearberry and bilberry, it is an emerging natural whitening active substance characterised by its non-irritating, non-allergenic properties and excellent compatibility. The molecular structure of arbutin contains two structural and functional groups: firstly, a glucose residue; secondly, a phenolic hydroxyl group. Physically, α-arbutin appears as a white to light grey powder, readily soluble in water and ethanol.
