Elamipretide (SS-31) is a small peptide that can reach inside the mitochondria and affect mitochondrial function maintenance. Elamipretide belongs to a family of cell-penetrating peptides that target and accumulate at the inner mitochondrial membrane. By stabilizing cardiolipin, SS-31 restores mitochondrial bioenergetics, reduces cytochrome c peroxidase activity, and prevents oxidative damage in cells with impaired mitochondrial function.

Activity note:

SS-31 does not act via traditional receptor agonism. It binds cardiolipin with high selectivity in the inner mitochondrial membrane. Functional EC₅₀ values are context-dependent (cell type, stress model). Key electrophysiology studies report mitochondrial membrane potential restoration at nanomolar concentrations.
