Latanoprost acts as a selective agonist at the FP receptor, which is a subtype of prostaglandin receptors. Its primary mechanism involves:
Increasing Aqueous Humor Outflow: Latanoprost enhances the outflow of aqueous humor through the uveoscleral pathway, thereby reducing IOP. This mechanism is crucial since elevated IOP is a significant risk factor for optic nerve damage and visual field loss in glaucoma patients.
Prodrug Conversion: Upon topical application, latanoprost is converted into its active form, latanoprost acid, which is responsible for its therapeutic effects. Peak concentrations in the aqueous humor are typically reached about 2 hours after administration, with IOP reduction beginning approximately 3–4 hours post-application and peaking at 8–12 hours.
