1. Description

Dipotassium glycyrrhizate is the potassium salt form of glycyrrhizic acid, which is extracted from licorice root. It belongs to the triterpene saponin class of compounds and appears as a white to off-white crystalline powder. This compound is highly soluble in water (50 mg/mL) and has a solubility of 9 mg/mL in dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO); its molecular weight is approximately 899.11. Its molecule possesses an amphiphilic structure, comprising a hydrophilic sugar moiety and a hydrophobic triterpenoid acid backbone, enabling it to form anionic micelles. This allows it to interact with cell membranes and facilitate drug delivery. Storage conditions require protection from light, in a sealed, dry container at 2–8°C. The compound exhibits various biological activities, including anti-inflammatory, anti-allergic, antioxidant, and antiviral properties. It was first approved for marketing in Japan in 1966 and is now widely used in the pharmaceutical and cosmetic industries.

2. Application

(1) Cosmetics and Skincare: Added as a soothing and anti-inflammatory ingredient to products such as lotions, creams, face masks, cleansers, eye creams, and sunscreens to improve dry, damaged skin, reduce flaking, and restore softness. Its anti-inflammatory properties help reduce the redness and irritation commonly associated with skin conditions such as rosacea, psoriasis, and acne.

(2) Oral Care Products: Added to toothpaste and mouthwash to inhibit plaque formation and reduce gingivitis. Clinical studies have shown that toothpaste containing 0.2% dipotassium glycyrrhizate has anti-inflammatory and gum-protecting effects.
