      Product Detail

Axona is a medical food marketed for the clinical dietary management of the impairment of metabolic processes associated with mild to moderate Alzheimer's disease. It is a proprietary formulation of fractionated coconut oil (caprylic triglyceride), a medium-chain triglyceride. Accera, Inc., the company that makes Axona, states that during digestion, caprylic triglyceride is broken down into ketones, which provide an alternative energy source for the brain. Its use is based on the idea that the brain's ability to use its normal energy source, glucose, is impaired in Alzheimer's disease. Axona was first sold in March 2009.
Axona has not been approved by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) as a drug to treat Alzheimer's and the efficacy of managing the health of Alzheimer's patients by use of this medical food has been questioned by experts in the field, including the Alzheimer's Association.

    Water Solubility:

    In water, 8.5X10-7 mol/L (0.40 mg/L) at 37 deg C

    Storage Conditions:

Tricaprylin is classified as a stable compound. It has high stability against oxidation and is not heat sensitive. Even in hot climates cooling is not necessary. However, exposure to high temperatures near the flash point (246℃) should be avoided. Owing to its very low water content, it is not sensitive to hydrolytic and microbial splitting. Although polymerization of tricaprylin will not occur, it is reported to decompose into carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide.
    Tricaprylin should be stor

    Hydroxyl radical reaction rate constant = 3.03X10-11 cu cm/molec-sec at 25 °C (est)|Base-catalyzed second-order hydrolysis reaction rate constant = 0.32 L/mol-sec at 25 °C (est)

    Air and Water Reactions:

    Insoluble in water.

    Reactive Group:

Esters, Sulfate Esters, Phosphate Esters, Thiophosphate Esters, and Borate Esters

    Reactivity Profile:

TRICAPRYLIN is an ester. Esters react with acids to liberate heat along with alcohols and acids. Strong oxidizing acids may cause a vigorous reaction that is sufficiently exothermic to ignite the reaction products. Heat is also generated by the interaction of esters with caustic solutions. Flammable hydrogen is generated by mixing esters with alkali metals and hydrides. This chemical is incompatible with strong oxidizers. (NTP, 1992).
