    Cytidine is one of the five nitrogenous bases that make up the genetic code in DNA and RNA. Nucleic acids are essential in heredity, cellular function, and biological reactions. Cytosine can also be methylated by adding a methyl (CH3) group at the C5 position and, in this modified form, plays a vital role in epigenetics. Moreover, cytosine can be transformed into other bases, such as uracil, further elevating the importance of this nitrogenous base in epigenetics. In its epigenetically modified form, cytosine associates with changes in the cellular and developmental process, neuron cell development, and human tumor development. Cytosine, in the form of cytidine triphosphate (CTP), may be used as an enzyme co-factor. Transferring a phosphate can convert adenosine diphosphate (ADP) to ATP. ATP is a high-energy molecule that is involved in a variety of cellular functions and essential biological reactions.


    Cytidine is one of the five primary nitrogenous bases found in the nucleic acids DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) and RNA (ribonucleic acid). Its molecular formula is C₄H₅N₃O. As a derivative of pyrimidine, it has a single-ring structure that is crucial for encoding genetic information.


    In the DNA double helix, cytosine is located on one strand and always pairs specifically with guanine (G) on the opposite strand. This pairing is stabilized by three hydrogen bonds, which makes the C-G linkage stronger and more heat-resistant than the A-T pair. In RNA, cytosine similarly binds with guanine.


    Beyond its structural role, cytosine is a hotspot for epigenetic regulation. In many organisms, including humans, a cytosine base can be modified by adding a methyl group (-CH₃) to become 5-methylcytosine. This "DNA methylation" process acts as a genetic switch, silencing gene expression without altering the DNA sequence. It is vital for cell differentiation, embryonic development, and genomic imprinting.


    However, Cytidine is also chemically vulnerable. It is prone to spontaneous deamination, a reaction that converts it into uracil. If left unrepaired by the cell’s machinery, this mutation would alter the genetic code, highlighting the constant battle between DNA stability and evolution.


    Due to these unique chemical properties, Cytidine and its derivatives are widely used in genetic research, pharmaceutical drug design (e.g., anticancer agents like azacitidine), and diagnostic tests for DNA methylation.
