    Metformin is a first-line and long-term treatment for type 2 diabetes. It primarily works by increasing insulin sensitivity in peripheral tissues such as muscle and fat, increasing glucose uptake and utilization, promoting anaerobic glycolysis, inhibiting hepatic gluconeogenesis, reducing hepatic glucose output, and inhibiting glucose uptake by intestinal parietal cells, thereby lowering fasting and postprandial hyperglycemia. In addition, metformin also has weight-loss effects, inhibits cholesterol biosynthesis and storage, lowers triglyceride and total cholesterol levels, improves vascular endothelial cell function, and increases blood flow. It is particularly suitable for obese or overweight type 2 diabetic patients, preventing the occurrence and development of diabetic macrovascular complications and reducing the incidence of cardiovascular events.
