    Sodium Polynaphthalene Formaldehyde Sulfonate
    Basic Properties
    pH Value: 6.0–9.0 (20 g/L aqueous solution, 25 °C)
Hydrolysis Sensitivity: 0, forms stable aqueous solutions
Cosmetic Ingredient Functions: Gel forming agent, emulsion stabilizer, surfactant – cleansing agent, surfactant – hydrotrope
EPA Chemical Identity: Naphthalenesulfonic acid, polymer with formaldehyde, sodium salt (CAS No. 9084-06-4)
    Characteristics, Applications & Manufacturing Processes
    Chemical Properties
This product appears as brown or dark brown powder. It dissolves easily in water and features strong resistance to acid, alkali and hard water. It delivers superior dispersibility and better high-temperature tolerance compared with dispersant NNO. Keep sealed to avoid moisture absorption during storage.
    Main Applications
Dye industry: Dispersant and levelling agent for disperse dyes, reactive dyes and vat dyes
Agrochemical industry: Dispersant and bulking agent for pesticides
    Leather processing: Tanning auxiliary agent
Construction field: Superplasticizer for cement and concrete, also applicable to oil well cement
Paper manufacturing: Pulp diluent to reduce two-sidedness, improve retention rate of fillers and fine fibers, optimize sizing performance and lower coating viscosity
Coatings & adhesives: High-efficiency dispersant for waterborne paints and pigment slurries; pigment dispersion aid for acrylic, aldehyde-acrylic and vinyl chloride copolymer latex paints; additive for adhesives, polymer filler powders and sealing layers to enhance water resistance
Manufacturing Route 1 (Based on Refined Naphthalene)
The production process consists of three core steps: naphthalene sulfonation, condensation of sulfonated intermediates with formaldehyde, and neutralization.
Add 550 kg refined naphthalene into the reactor and heat to 50 °C for a 4-hour reaction.
Cool down, introduce steam and hydrolyze byproducts to obtain 1-naphthalenesulfonic acid.
Transfer the hydrolyzed material to a polymerization reactor, add 37% formaldehyde aqueous solution and conduct the reaction under 196 kPa pressure.
Add alkaline solution to neutralize the mixture to pH 8–10.
Cool down for crystallization, filter crude crystals and dry to obtain finished powder.
Manufacturing Route 2 (Based on Methylnaphthalene)
The workflow includes methylnaphthalene sulfonation, formaldehyde condensation and neutralization.
Load 500 kg methylnaphthalene into the sulfonation reactor, heat to melt and stir continuously; maintain 130–140 °C for a 2-hour sulfonation reaction.
Add 210 L water under rapid stirring and mix for another 30 minutes. Test total acidity; the qualified range is 25%–27%.
Cool the mixture to 90–100 °C, then add 300 kg 37% formaldehyde solution in one batch. Allow natural temperature and pressure rise, control reaction parameters at 130–140 °C and 0.15–0.20 MPa for 2 hours to complete condensation.
Introduce 30% alkaline solution to neutralize the reactant to pH around 7.
Cool for crystallization, filter and dry the crystalline solids to get final product.
