    Product Introduction

Polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) is a solid polymer available in white powder, flake or flocculent forms with a glass transition temperature ranging from 60 °C to 85 °C. Containing a large number of polar hydroxyl groups, PVA can form hydrogen bonds with water, enabling good solubility in polar hot water. It is also soluble in hot hydroxyl-containing solvents such as glycerol and phenol, while insoluble in common organic solvents including methanol, benzene, acetone and gasoline.

    Product Classification

Classified by polymerization degree: ultra-high polymerization degree (molecular weight: 250,000-300,000), high polymerization degree (molecular weight: 170,000-220,000), medium polymerization degree (molecular weight: 120,000-150,000), and low polymerization degree (molecular weight: 25,000-35,000).
Classified by alcoholysis degree: full alcoholysis (98%-100%), partial alcoholysis (87%-89%) and 78% alcoholysis. The product model is marked with the first three digits of polymerization degree followed by the alcoholysis degree. For example, PVA 17-99 represents a polymerization degree of 1700 and an alcoholysis degree of 99%.

    Chemical Properties

PVA resin is a non-toxic, odorless and pollution-free white solid in powder, particle or flocculent form. It can be completely dissolved in water at 80-90 °C. Its aqueous solution features excellent adhesion and film-forming properties, and is resistant to most organic solvents such as oils, lubricants and hydrocarbons. It possesses typical chemical properties of long-chain polyols, including esterification, etherification and acetalization reactions.

    Main Applications

As a widely used water-soluble polymer, PVA features properties between plastic and rubber. It is extensively applied in textile, food, pharmaceutical, construction, wood processing, papermaking, printing, agriculture, steel and chemical industries.
In the construction industry, PVA powder serves as an efficient additive for building mortar. When combined with methyl cellulose ether water retention agents, it can significantly improve the flexibility, water retention and bonding strength of cement mortar, reduce mortar friction, and enhance construction efficiency and finished product quality.
In the textile industry, it is used as warp sizing agent and fabric finishing agent, and raw material for vinylon fibers. In the chemical industry, it acts as a polymerization emulsifier and dispersant, and a raw material for polyvinyl acetal resins. In the papermaking industry, it is used as paper adhesive and coating agent.
It is also widely used as soil conditioner and pesticide adhesion auxiliary in agriculture, film materials, cosmetic additives, high-frequency quenching agents, and medical auxiliary materials. Additionally, it is applicable in manufacturing gasoline-resistant pipelines, canvas, rubber conveyor belts, tire cord fabrics, cables, fishing nets and packaging materials.

    Food Additive Usage Standard

As a coating agent for candy and chocolate products, the maximum dosage of polyvinyl alcohol is 18.0 g/kg.

    Production Method

Produced by saponification reaction of vinyl acetate monomers.

    Air and Water Reactions:

    Water soluble.

    Reactive Group:

    Alcohols and Polyols

    Reactivity Profile:

Mixtures of alcohols with concentrated sulfuric acid and strong hydrogen peroxide can cause explosions. Example: an explosion will occur if dimethylbenzylcarbinol is added to 90% hydrogen peroxide then acidified with concentrated sulfuric acid. Mixtures of ethyl alcohol with concentrated hydrogen peroxide form powerful explosives. Mixtures of hydrogen peroxide and 1-phenyl-2-methyl propyl alcohol tend to explode if acidified with 70% sulfuric acid [Chem. Eng. News 45(43):73. 1967; J, Org. Chem. 28:1893. 1963]. Alkyl hypochlorites are violently explosive. They are readily obtained by reacting hypochlorous acid and alcohols either in aqueous solution or mixed aqueous- carbon tetrachloride solutions. Chlorine plus alcohols would similarly yield alkyl hypochlorites. They decompose in the cold and explode on exposure to sunlight or heat. Tertiary hypochlorites are less unstable than secondary or primary hypochlorites [NFPA 491 M 1991]. Base-catalysed reactions of isocyanates with alcohols should be carried out in inert solvents. Such reactions in the absence of solvents often occur with explosive violence [Wischmeyer 1969].

    Physical Dangers:

Dust explosion possible if in powder or granular form, mixed with air. As a result of flow, agitation, etc., electrostatic charges can be generated.
