    Comprehensive Physical & Chemical Properties

Sodium bromide is a colorless cubic crystal or white granular powder at room temperature with an isometric crystal system. It is odorless with a slightly bitter and alkaline taste. The product is hygroscopic and tends to agglomerate in air without deliquescence. It is slightly soluble in ethanol and highly soluble in water, with a water solubility of 121 g per 100 mL of water at 100 ℃. Its aqueous solution is neutral and electrically conductive.
Anhydrous sodium bromide crystals precipitate from aqueous solution at 51 ℃, while dihydrate crystals form below 51 ℃. Bromide ions in sodium bromide can be substituted by fluorine and chlorine elements. Under acidic conditions, bromide ions can be oxidized by oxygen to release elemental bromine, which is widely applied in industrial bromine production.
Sodium bromide can react with dilute sulfuric acid to produce hydrobromic acid. Since hydrobromic acid is a strong acid, it cannot be effectively prepared using dilute sulfuric acid. In industrial production, high-boiling-point acids are used to prepare low-boiling-point hydrobromic acid. Concentrated sulfuric acid is not suitable for this process due to its strong oxidizing property, which oxidizes bromide ions into elemental bromine and produces reddish-brown fumes. This reaction phenomenon can be used to distinguish sodium iodide. Concentrated phosphoric acid is the suitable raw material for preparing hydrobromic acid through heating reaction with solid sodium bromide.

    Product Applications

Sodium bromide is a common analytical reagent and an essential raw material for inorganic and organic synthesis and fine chemical production. It is widely applied in photosensitive material manufacturing, fine chemical industry, synthetic fragrance processing, dye production, textile printing and dyeing and other industrial fields.
In the photosensitive industry, it is used for preparing photosensitive solutions for film production. In the fragrance industry, it serves as a key material for synthetic fragrance manufacturing. In the printing and dyeing industry, it is used as a professional brominating agent for textile treatment. It is also widely utilized in various organic synthesis processes.
Other applications include trace detection of cadmium, preparation of various bromide products, photographic plate-making and fine chemical manufacturing.

    Production Methods

    1. Urea Reduction Method

Dissolve sodium carbonate and urea in hot water and transfer the mixture into a reactor. Add bromine slowly under continuous stirring to react and generate sodium bromide crude product. Activated carbon is added for decolorization, followed by filtration, evaporative crystallization, centrifugal separation and drying to obtain high-purity finished sodium bromide.
    Reaction Equation: 3Br₂ + 3Na₂CO₃ + NH₂CONH₂ → 6NaBr + 4CO₂↑ + N₂↑ + 2H₂O

    2. Neutralization Method

Add 40% hydrobromic acid into the reactor, then slowly add 40% sodium hydroxide solution under continuous stirring for neutralization reaction. Stop feeding raw materials when the solution pH value reaches 7.5–8 to obtain crude sodium bromide solution. The finished product is obtained through centrifugal separation, evaporation, crystallization and secondary centrifugal separation.
Reaction Equation: HBr + NaOH → NaBr + H₂O
Alternative neutralization process adopts sodium carbonate to react with hydrobromic acid.
    Reaction Equation: 2HBr + Na₂CO₃ → 2NaBr + H₂O + CO₂↑
Fire Hazard Characteristics: Non-combustible; harmless decomposed fumes may generate under high-temperature combustion conditions
Storage & Transportation Requirements: Store in low-temperature, ventilated and dry warehouse environments
Fire Extinguishing Agents: Water, carbon dioxide, dry powder, foam
Safety Protection: Avoid direct inhalation, ingestion, skin and eye contact with the product. In case of accidental contact, rinse the affected area with plenty of clean water immediately.
