    —— Product Detail ——

    Product Overview

n-Amyl acetate (pentyl acetate) is an ester compound with the molecular formula C₇H₁₄O₂ and a molecular weight of 130.19 g/mol. This colorless clear liquid is characterized by a pleasant banana-like odor, earning it the common name "banana oil." The compound is widely used as a solvent in coatings, paints, and lacquers, as well as a flavoring agent in the food and fragrance industry. Its excellent solvating properties for nitrocellulose, resins, and oils make it valuable in various industrial applications. The compound is also used as a laboratory reagent and as an intermediate in organic synthesis.

    Synthetic Process

n-Amyl acetate is synthesized through the following routes:

    • Esterification of n-amyl alcohol with acetic acid: n-Amyl alcohol is reacted with acetic acid in the presence of an acid catalyst (such as sulfuric acid) under reflux conditions.

    • Purification: The crude product is purified by distillation or by washing and drying followed by distillation.

Mechanism of Action / Application Principles

    • Solvent: Used as a solvent for nitrocellulose, resins, and oils in coatings and paints.

    • Flavor and Fragrance: Imparts a banana-like aroma in food products and perfumes.

    • Organic Synthesis: Serves as a solvent and reagent in various organic reactions.

    Reactivity Profile:

AMYL ACETATE is an ester. Esters react with acids to liberate heat along with alcohols and acids. Strong oxidizing acids may cause a vigorous reaction that is sufficiently exothermic to ignite the reaction products. Heat is also generated by the interaction of esters with caustic solutions. Flammable hydrogen is generated by mixing esters with alkali metals and hydrides. This compound is incompatible with the following: Nitrates; strong oxidizers, alkalis & acids (NIOSH, 2016).
