Product Overview

Acrylic acid is an unsaturated carboxylic acid with the molecular formula C₃H₄O₂ and a molecular weight of 72.06 g/mol. This colorless clear liquid is a fundamental industrial chemical and one of the most important monomers in polymer chemistry. The compound features both a carboxylic acid group and a vinyl group, enabling polymerization to form polyacrylic acid and various copolymers. Acrylic acid and its derivatives are widely used in the production of superabsorbent polymers, adhesives, paints, coatings, and textile sizing agents. Synthetic Process

Acrylic acid is manufactured through the following routes:

• Oxidation of propylene: Propylene is oxidized in two stages (to acrolein and then to acrylic acid) using metal oxide catalysts at high temperatures.

• Hydrolysis of acrylonitrile: Acrylonitrile is hydrolyzed using sulfuric acid to produce acrylic acid.

• Purification: The crude product is purified by distillation, often with a polymerization inhibitor added to prevent unwanted polymerization.

Mechanism of Action / Application Principles

• Polymerization: Undergoes free-radical polymerization to form polyacrylic acid and copolymers with other monomers.

• Superabsorbent Polymers: Used in the production of sodium polyacrylate for diapers and personal care products.

• Coatings and Adhesives: Used in the formulation of water-based paints, adhesives, and sealants.
