Description	Bongkrekic acid is a long-chain unsaturated fatty acid containing three carboxylic groups, and is the toxic principle of P. cocovenenas. It is a mitochondrial toxin secreted by Pseudomonas, produced in fermented coconut contaminated by the pathovar of Burkholderia gladioli. It is a more potent respiratory toxin than cyanide.

Biological Activity & Mechanism of Action

Bongkrekic acid is a specific ligand (rather than acting on the electron transport chain) of the mitochondrial adenine nucleotide (ADP/ATP) translocase (ANT), and must act through the mitochondrial inner membrane to inhibit ADP/ATP transport.

It is an inhibitor of adenine nucleotide translocase, which is a component of the Mitochondrial Permeability Transition (MPT) pore complex. It prevents mitochondrial depolarization, swelling, rupture of the mitochondrial outer membrane, and release of apoptogenic proteins such as Cytochrome c. It thereby exhibits anti-apoptotic activity.

It is produced by the bacterium Burkholderia gladioli and implicated in outbreaks of food-borne illness involving coconut and corn-based products in Indonesia and China. It has a role as an apoptosis inhibitor, an EC 2.5.1.18 (glutathione transferase) inhibitor, a toxin, an ATP/ADP translocase inhibitor and a bacterial metabolite. It is a tricarboxylic acid, an ether and an olefinic compound. It is a conjugate acid of a bongkrekate(3-).|An antibiotic produced by Pseudomonas cocovenenans. It is an inhibitor of MITOCHONDRIAL ADP, ATP TRANSLOCASES. Specifically, it blocks adenine nucleotide efflux from mitochondria by enhancing membrane binding.
