    Uses & Synthetic Methods
    Uses
Used in food industry as acidulant, color retention agent, preservative and emulsifying stabilizer for egg yolk and other products; also applied in pharmaceutical field.
When appropriately added into feed, it can deplete somatostatin, regulate animal growth axis, boost growth‑hormone secretion, and enhance metabolism of energy, protein, calcium and phosphorus, so as to promote animal growth. It can also improve feed conversion rate, lean meat percentage and carcass quality.
Serves as intermediate for cimetidine and ranitidine. It acts as biochemical reagent and complexing agent for heavy‑metal ions.
As an aminothiol compound, it can reduce disulfide molecules such as cystine to cysteine. It is widely used in applications including gene expression regulation, somatostatin depletion and nanoparticle coating. It is applied for volumetric titration of cobalt, nickel, copper, zinc, cadmium and mercury.
Applied in biochemical research. Used as antioxidant.
    Chemical Properties
White crystalline substance with special odor; hygroscopic, freely soluble in water and ethanol; light‑sensitive. Its aqueous solution is easily oxidized to cystamine and precipitation may occur. Melting point:71℃.
    Production Method
Prepared from 2‑aminoethanol via bromination with hydrobromic acid, cyclization reaction with sulfuric acid and carbon disulfide, followed by hydrochloric acid hydrolysis.

    ECHEMI Editorial Reference
    White Solid
A mercaptoethylamine compound that is endogenously derived from the COENZYME A degradative pathway. The fact that cysteamine is readily transported into LYSOSOMES where it reacts with CYSTINE to form cysteine-cysteamine disulfide and CYSTEINE has led to its use in CYSTINE DEPLETING AGENTS for the treatment of CYSTINOSIS.
