Triethylamine

Properties
A colorless, volatile liquid with a strong ammonia odor and flammable. Slightly soluble in water, but soluble in ethanol, ether, and most organic solvents. The explosive limit in air is 1.2% to 8.0%. It is alkaline. Its vapor forms an explosive mixture with air, which may ignite or explode upon exposure to open flame or high heat. Reacts vigorously with oxidizing agents.

Preparation
Under oxygen atmosphere, ethanol reacts with ammonia at elevated temperature in the presence of a copper-nickel-clay catalyst, yielding a mixture of mono-, di-, and triethylamines.

The mixture is condensed, extracted, and absorbed to obtain a crude product. The crude product is then separated, allowed to stand for phase separation, dehydrated, and distilled to yield the final product.

Applications
Can be used as a catalyst in the phosgene process for producing polycarbonates. Acts as an inhibitor for tetrafluoroethylene. Functions as a special solvent in paint strippers. Used as a rubber vulcanization accelerator. Can serve as a surfactant.

Also employed as an ion-exchange resin, preservative, bactericide, dye, and fragrance.

Used as an anti-hardening agent in enamel coatings. Applied in pharmaceuticals and high-energy raw materials such as liquid rocket propellants. Can act as a solvent and, when combined with organotin compounds, serves as a catalyst in the production of polyurethane foam plastics.
