Solubility performance: Soluble in ether, slightly soluble in alcohol, sparingly soluble in chloroform, carbon tetrachloride and carbon disulfide; practically insoluble in cold alcohol and water.

    Applications

It serves as dye intermediate, pharmaceutical intermediate and agro‑chemical intermediate. It can be used for seed treatment in agriculture. In material industry, it can be applied for synthesis of certain dyes, acting as antioxidant and antistatic agent for polyethylene, cross‑linking agent for epoxy resin copolymer, and additive for rubber and plastic materials. It can also be used for detection of primary amines and secondary amines.

    Synthesis Method

Method 1: Tetrachlorohydroquinone reacts with butyl nitrite in mixed solvent of dichloromethane and methanol at room temperature under atmospheric pressure with stirring for 30 minutes. The precipitated solid is collected by filtration to obtain target product.

Method 2: Sodium pentachlorophenate solution is acidified with hydrochloric acid to form slurry. Anhydrous ferric trichloride is added, then chlorine gas is introduced above 95 ℃ until oily phase becomes clear. The aqueous layer is separated, and the organic phase is acidified with concentrated sulfuric acid to get chloranil.

    Safety & Storage Information

Toxicity: Moderate toxicity. Oral‑rat LD50: 4000 mg/kg. Hazard characteristic: Toxic chloride‑containing fumes may generate under combustion. Storage & Transportation: Store in ventilated, cool and dry warehouse; keep away from food raw materials. Fire Extinguishing Media: Dry powder, foam, sand.
