    MOTS‑C (Mitochondrial Open Reading Frame of the 12S rRNA Type‑c) is a 16‑amino‑acid peptide encoded within the mitochondrial DNA, discovered by the Lee laboratory at the University of Southern California. Unlike most hormones encoded in nuclear DNA, MOTS‑C is one of the few known mitochondrial‑encoded signaling peptides.
