DSIP (Delta Sleep-Inducing Peptide) is a naturally occurring nonapeptide with the sequence Trp-Ala-Gly-Gly-Asp-Ala-Ser-Gly-Glu (WAGGDASGE), first isolated in 1977 by the Schoenenberger-Monnier group at the University of Basel from the cerebral venous blood of rabbits during paradoxical sleep. DSIP is widely distributed in the brain, particularly in the hypothalamus, limbic system, and brainstem, and is also found in peripheral tissues including the pituitary gland, adrenal glands, and gastrointestinal tract. It plays a role in sleep regulation, neuroendocrine function, stress response, and analgesia.
