    Oxalic acid is a colorless transparent crystalline powder with the molecular formula C₂H₂O₄ and a molecular weight of 90.03 g/mol. It is the simplest dicarboxylic acid and occurs naturally in many plants. It is a moderately strong organic acid widely used in laboratories, industrial cleaning, chemical synthesis, and various other applications .

    Applications

    • Analytical Chemistry: Used as a reagent in various analytical procedures and as a primary standard for standardization of solutions

    • Chemical Manufacturing: Used in the production of antibiotics, borneol, and other pharmaceuticals; synthesis of oxalates, oxalic esters, and oxalamides 

    • Industrial Cleaning: Used as a descaling agent for metal equipment and rust remover 

    • Textile and Dye Industry: Used as a mordant, dye reducing agent, and fabric bleach

    Chemical Properties

    • Acidity: Stronger than acetic acid; 0.1 mol/L solution pH ~1.3 at room temperature 

    • Reducing Properties: Easily oxidized to CO₂ and water; can reduce Fe³⁺ to Fe²⁺ and MnO₄⁻ to Mn²⁺ 

    • Chelating Properties: Forms soluble chelates with calcium, magnesium, and iron ions, making it effective for scale removal
