        Trimellitic anhydride (TMA) is an organic compound with the molecular formula C₉H₄O₅ and molecular weight of 192.13 g/mol. This white to off-white crystalline solid is a valuable intermediate in polymer, resin, and plasticizer synthesis. The compound features an anhydride group and a carboxylic acid group on a benzene ring.
        Synthetic Process
        
        Oxidation: Pseudocumene (1,2,4-trimethylbenzene) is oxidized using air in the presence of cobalt/manganese catalysts to form trimellitic acid
        
        Dehydration: Trimellitic acid is heated to dehydrate and form the anhydride
        
        Purification: The crude product is purified by vacuum distillation and sublimation
