While cooling in an ice/water bath, Intermediate 62 (59 g, 545 mmol) was added portionwise to concentrated sulfuric acid (290 mL), keeping the temperature below 40°C. At 0°C, an ice-cooled mixture of fuming nitric acid (25.5 mL, 600 mmol) in concentrated sulfuric acid (58 mL) was added dropwise over about 45 minutes, keeping the (0626) temperature below 20°C. After the addition was complete, the reaction mixture was stirred at r.t. for 2 h, then poured into a mixture of ice and water (1.5 L). Ammonium hydroxide was added carefully to the resulting mixture until the pH was approximately 1- 2. The resulting precipitate was filtered and dried to afford the title compound (69.5 g, 83percent). δ4-Methylpyridin-3-ol (52; 8.4 g, 78.5 mmol) was added to ice cold cone. H2S0
