White to Off-White Crystalline Powder

ChEBI: The 6alpha-stereoisomer of 6-methylprednisolone.

Methylprednisolone, 11β,17,21-trihydroxy-6α-methyl-1,4-pregnadiene-3,20-dione, isavailable unmodified or as ester derivatives.Methylprednisolone acetate, USPMethylprednisolone sodium succinate, USP.

Moderately toxic by intraperitoneal route. A steroid hormone. Human systemic effects include arrhythmias, blood pressure lowering, heart rate changes, increased body temperature, pulse rate increase, respiratory depression. When heated to decomposition it emits acrid smoke and irritating fumes.

Recrystallise medrol from EtOAc. The UV has max at in 95% EtOH 243nm ( 14,875). The 21-acetoxy derivative has m 205-208o (from EtOAc), and [] D +95o ( c 1, CHCl3). [Spero et al. Methylprednisolone Use and Manufacturing

A glucocorticoid which displays anti-inflamatory and antioxidant properties and attenuates apoptosis in oligodendrocytes after injury. 6α-Methyl Prednisolone is neuroprotective.

Drug Function and Efficacy

Synthetic glucocorticoids bind to specific receptors in the cytoplasm, enter the cell nucleus and bind to DNA, initiate mRNA transcription, and synthesize various enzyme proteins, affecting the inflammatory and immune processes, carbohydrate, protein and fat metabolism, as well as the cardiovascular system, skeletal and muscular system and central nervous system. The glucocorticoid-like effect (anti-inflammatory effect) of 4.4 mg methylprednisolone acetate (4 mg methylprednisolone) is the same as that of 20 mg hydrocortisone. Methylprednisolone has only a very low mineralocorticoid-like effect.

Indication	When methylprednisolone tablets are used in patients with active tuberculosis, they should be limited to fulminant or diffuse tuberculosis, for which corticosteroids can be used in combination with appropriate anti-tuberculosis drugs to control the disease. If corticosteroids are used in patients in the latent stage of tuberculosis or with a positive tuberculin test, they must be closely observed to prevent recurrence of the disease. Such patients should receive chemoprevention during long-term use of corticosteroids.
