Sodium dithionate Use and Manufacturing

Methods of Manufacturing

Industrial production methods include zinc powder method and sodium formate method. The former has higher product purity, but larger investment and longer production process. The latter has a slightly lower product purity than the zinc powder method, but has less investment and a shorter production process. The zinc powder method is the most widely used industrial method. 99.9% of sulfur dioxide is introduced into the aqueous suspension of zinc powder, and the reaction is carried out at 35-45°C to form a zinc dithionite solution, and then the caustic soda solution is added and stirred under cooling. The metathesis reaction is carried out at 28-35°C to generate a suspension of sodium dithionite and zinc hydroxide. After filtering, adding a certain amount of refined salt under cooling and stirring for salting out. The reaction temperature gradually drops from 36°C to below 20°C. After standing, it is heated to 58-60°C for dehydration, then washed with ethanol, dried, and added. After a certain amount of soda ash, the finished product of sodium dithionite is obtained. Zn+2SO2→ZnS2O4ZnS2O4+2NaOH→Na2S2O4+Zn(OH)2 Sodium Formate Method Under stirring, add sodium formate and soda ash (or caustic soda) to the alcohol aqueous solution at 75°C, pass 99.9% sulfur dioxide to react, and then cool to 45 ~S5°C. After filtration, ethanol washing, recrystallization, separation, and drying, the finished product of sodium dithionite is obtained. 2NaCOOH+Na2CO3+4SO2→2Na2S2O4+H2O+3CO2↑

Uses

It is widely used in the printing and dyeing industry, such as bleaching aids for cotton fabrics and silk fabrics. It is also used in medicine, mineral processing and copperplate printing. Used as bleaching agent in paper industry. Food-grade products are used as bleaching agents, preservatives, and antioxidants.
