Description
Selenium is a nonmetal (or semimetallic) element (also referred to as a metalloid). It belongs to Group 16 (Group VIA) of the periodic table, located between sulfur and tellurium.
The chemical properties of selenium are similar to sulfur. Selenium combines with metals and many nonmetals directly or in aqueous solution. It does not react directly with hydrogen fluoride or hydrogen chloride but decomposes hydrogen iodide to liberate iodine and yield hydrogen selenide. The selenides r

Combustible at high temperature; selenium oxide fumes are released in the fire
During attempted conversion of recovered selenium metal to the dioxide by heating in oxygen, a vigorous explosion occurred. This was attributed to selenium-catalysed oxidation traces of organic impurities in the selenium. Oxidation of recovered selenium with nitric acid is rendered vigorous by presence of organic impurities, but is a safe procedure.

Selenium Use and Manufacturing
Using metallic selenium as raw material, it is refined after regional melting, and the purity of high-purity selenium is 99.999%.
Catalyst for Kjeldahl nitrogen determination, inorganic dehydrogenation agent. It is used for manufacturing semiconductor materials, photometers, photocells and other optical instruments, rectifiers, selenium photosensitive plates, copying toner cartridges, alloys, enamels and glass. Used for ICP-AES, AAS, AFS, ICP-MS, ion chromatography, etc. Standard solution for titration analysis. Calibration instruments and devices; evaluation methods; working standards; quality assurance/quality control; others.
