Colorless gas, decomposes at 350C, insoluble in water, soluble in liquid ammonia, slightly soluble in hot hydrochloric acid. Germane is a colorless, flammable gas. Pungent odor.

Breathing: If a person breathes large amounts of this chemical, move the exposed person to fresh air at once. If breathing has stopped, perform mouth-to-mouth resuscitation. Keep the affected person warm and at rest. Get medical attention as soon as possible. (NIOSH, 2016)|(See procedures)

Germanides can be produced by melting other metals with germanium and freezing the melt, e.g., Mg2Ge [1310-52-7]. Germanes ( germanium hydrides) are evolved when germanides react with acids: monogermane ... can be separated by fractional distillation.|Prepared by the action of lithium aluminium hydride on germanium halide in ether solution.|Germane, GeH4, can also be produced by the reduction of GeCl4 using lithium aluminum hydride or by the reduction of GeO2 by sodium borohydride in water solution.
It is used to produce high-purity germaniummetal and as a doping substance for electroniccomponents. Germanium tetrahydride (GeH4) is used to produce crystals of germanium. It is extremely toxic.

Germanium can be determined by photometry at 510 nm after complexation with phenylfluorone [975-17-7]. Atomic absorption spectroscopy at 261.1 nm is less sensitive than the previous method. X-Ray fluorescence enables determination down to 5x10-3%.
