Description
Carbopol 940 is a high molecular weight, cross-linked polyacrylic acid polymer that appears as a white, fluffy powder and is widely used for its thickening, suspending, and stabilizing properties. It is soluble in water and forms clear, high-viscosity gels upon neutralization within a pH range of 5 to 8. The polymer is highly efficient even at low concentrations and is compatible with a broad range of ingredients, making it ideal for use in cosmetics and pharmaceutical formulations such as gels, creams, and lotions.

Acrylic acid is a colorless liquid with a distinctive acrid odor. Flash point 130°F. Boiling point 286°F. Freezing point 53°F. Corrosive to metals and tissue. Prolonged exposure to fire or heat can cause polymerization. If polymerization takes place in a closed container, violent rupture may occur. The inhibitor (usually hydroquinone) greatly reduces the tendency to polymerize.

Fireproof. Separated from strong oxidants, strong bases, strong acids and food and feedstuffs. Keep in the dark. Store only if stabilized. Store in an area without drain or sewer access. Storage conditions may vary according to the type of inhibitor used. Refer to the manufacturer's instructions for proper storage conditions. See Notes.
Carbomers are discolored by resorcinol and are incompatible with phenol, cationic polymers, strong acids, and high levels of electrolytes. Certain antimicrobial adjuvants should also be avoided or used at low levels. Trace levels of iron and other transition metals can catalytically degrade carbomer dispersions. Certain amino-functional actives form complexes with carbomer Carbomers also form pH-dependent complexes with certain polymeric excipients.

Carbopol 940 Use and Manufacturing
In pharmaceutical production, carbomer resin is mainly used as thickener, suspending agent, binder, and framework material for controlled and sustained-release preparations. As a new type of pharmaceutical excipient, carbomer resin can be used in liquid preparations and semi-solids. Formulations and solid formulations.
