Description

Propanethiol is chemically classified among the thiols, which are organic compounds with molecular formulas and structural formulas similar to alcohols, except that sulfur-containing sulfhydryl group (- SH) replaces the oxygen - containing hydroxyl group in the molecule. Propanethiol's basic molecular formula is C3H7SH, and its structural formula is similar to that of the alcohol n-propanol. Propyl mercaptan has a characteristic odor of cabbage.

1-Propanethiol Use and Manufacturing

Methods of Manufacturing

The preparation method is derived from the reaction of bromopropane and thiourea. Thiourea and bromopropane were refluxed in methanol solution for 3h. After methanol recovery, dilute sodium hydroxide solution was added and refluxed for 6h. Then, slowly add dilute sulfuric acid, and distill out the propyl mercaptan with the addition. When the dilute sulfuric acid is added, continue to distill until the oil beads cannot be evaporated. The collected oil layer is a crude product, dried with anhydrous calcium chloride, and then rectified, and the fractions of bp 66.5-76.5°C are collected as the finished product. In addition, propanol and hydrogen sulfide can also be obtained by catalytic reaction at 300 ~ 380 ℃.
