2-Octanol Use and Manufacturing
When producing sebacic acid from castor oil, 2-octanol can be recovered. Castor oil is a fat containing hydroxy fatty acids. Of the fatty acid composition, 80-85% is ricinoleic acid. Under the conditions of strong alkali and high temperature (250-280℃), the inside of the molecule will be broken to produce disodium sebacate, 2-octanol and hydrogen. Ricinoleic acid and sodium hydroxide phenol are reacted in a cracking kettle at a weight ratio of 100:50:8.25. After the alkali is added, the water is heated, and the octanol is evaporated during the reaction. Octanol can also be recovered from the hydrolysate of castor oil. Raw material consumption quota: castor oil 2310kg/t, sulfuric acid (95%) 1351kg/t, caustic soda (98%) 1104kg/t.
The product is esterified with phthalic anhydride to obtain polyvinyl chloride and plasticizer dioctyl phthalate. It is also used in synthetic fiber oils, defoamers and surfactants, coal mine flotation agents and pesticide emulsification The raw material of the agent can also be used as a solvent for fats and waxes. Oxidation with nitric acid yields acetic acid, which is the raw material for the anthelmintic drug Rezoxin.
2-Octanol is used as a chemical reagent in the synthesis of a variety of pharmaceutical compounds usually through its oxidation to a ketone or aldehyde. Used in the synthesis of piperine derivates as MAO A & B inhibitors.
