It is an ammonium salt and an oxalate salt. It contains an oxalate(2-).|A strong dicarboxylic acid occurring in many plants and vegetables. It is produced in the body by metabolism of glyoxylic acid or ascorbic acid. It is not metabolized but excreted in the urine. It is used as an analytical reagent and general reducing agent.

OXALATES ARE WELL ABSORBED FROM THE INTESTINE. /THEY ARE/...NOT BURNED IN THE BODY, BUT UNITE WITH TISSUE & BLOOD CALCIUM & ARE EXCRETED BY THE KIDNEY. /OXALATES/
Ingestion or excessive inhalation of dust causes systemic poisoning; possible symptoms include pain in throat, esophagus, and stomach; mucous membranes turn white; vomiting, severe purging, weak pulse, cardiovascular collapse, neuromuscular symptoms. Contact with eyes causes irritation. Contact with skin causes irritation or severe burns. (USCG, 1999)
Speed is essential. INHALATION: remove to fresh air. INGESTION: call physician immediately; induce vomiting. EYES: flush with water and seek medical attention. SKIN: flush with water. OTHER: watch for swelling of the glottis and delayed constriction of the esophagus. (USCG, 1999)

IF DEATH IS DELAYED FOR A FEW HR, NERVOUS OR NEUROMUSCULAR SYMPTOMS DEVELOP: HEADACHE, MUSCLE CRAMPS...TETANY, SOMETIMES CONVULSIONS, STUPOR, COMA, & DEATH. 5. RENAL DAMAGE, AS EVIDENCED BY OLIGURIA. Ethanedioic acid, ammonium salt (1:2): ACTIVE|Comparison of 10 techniques for metal & substrate extractions among the sediments of 19 estuaries from south and west England (UK) indicate substrate characterization is best accomplished by iron and manganese extractions with acid ammonium oxalate.|Aerobic sewage sludges from Winder and Norcross, Georgia (USA), were subjected to chemical fractionation to study the distribution of sludge-borne zinc and IR spectroscopic analysis to investigate the water-soluble & insoluble light (less than 2 g/cu m) organic components. Sequential chem fractionation indicated that the 2 sludges probably contained different kinds of zinc compounds. Sodium hypochlorite plus ammonium acetate and acid ammonium oxalate (darkness) extracted a greater percentage of the total zinc in both Winder sludges. A comparable percentage of the total zinc in both sludges was extracted by acid ammonium oxalate (UV). Incorporation of sludge into soil and exposure to the soil environment for 2 yr (weathering or aging) caused considerable changes in the chemical extractability of the sludge zinc.|To clarify the mechanism of heavy metal (Pb, Cd, Zn, Mn, & Fe) pollution in bottom sediments, water pollutants were analyzed & the relationship between water flow & concn of heavy metals in sediments was discussed. The partitioning rate of heavy metals extracted by 0.2 M ammonium oxalate was greater than 20%, except for cadmium.
