what reagent tests for starch today?

Best known starch reagent is Benedict's reagent, which contains ferric chloride and concentrated hydrochloric acid. It can be used to test for the presence of reducing sugar or dextrin in a sample. Benedict's reagent is based on the ability of starch granules to absorb hydrogen ions when treated with ferric chloride. In its colored form, Benedict's reagent is orange or brown in color. This affects the ease of spot testing a little bit, but it remains a very useful and simple test kit.
