What is Toluene 2 5 diamine sulphate, properties and use?

ECHEMI 2022-11-09

Toluene 2 5 diamine sulphate is a chemical compound used as a petrol additive. It is made by reacting toluene and hydrogen sulfide together in presence of alkali under pressure. It is also called DDBA, which stands for diethylbenzidine bisulfite.

What are the properties of toluene 2 5 diamine sulphate?

1. It can be made in the laboratory and manufactured in small quantities. The process involves the conversion of toluene into methylbenzene, a benzene ring containing toluene and a DBA sulfonic acid group.

2. It is white crystals which is highly soluble in water and converts into yellowish liquid when mixed with water. It comprises organic and organic sulfonic acid elements.

3. It is used in industrial solvent mixtures and most of the solvents used in this process belongs to the class of aromatic hydrocarbon solvents. These are act as cleaning agents, de-greasing or wetting agents, dissolve paints, oils and fats etc. They are also known as turpentine substitutes or hydrocarbon solvent substitutes etc., which can be used in paints etc.

4. It has the same chemical composition as toluene but it has a slightly different physical state

It is slightly less volatile and lighter than toluene. This chemical can be prepared relatively easily using the hydrogen sulfide and a reducing agent. Thus, it is another dangerous chemical that can be used in production of conventional pesticides and also in other industries such as oil refining and paint manufacturing etc., which require toluene or xylene but with some restrictions on its use because of its health effects on humans.

5. It is produced by reacting toluene with hydrogen sulfide in presence of an alkali under pressure. The reaction takes place at high temperature and pressure in a vessel called as autoclave.

6. Though it does not come under the most hazardous chemicals in terms of toxicity, it is still a harmful chemical for health and environment and hence, used only in industrial processes when no other solvent can be found to use with some restrictions on its usage.

7. It is a colourless liquid having density of 1.0532 g/cm3 at 25 ℃ which changes into yellow liquid when it mixes with water and forms insoluble white precipitate of dibenzidine sulfonic acid.

Uses of toluene 2 5 diamine sulphate

1. Used in automotive industry

It is used in many automotive and electronic products like, CD players, CD recorder, TV sets and digital cameras. It improves the durability of electrical components because the gold plating process can be achieved with this element.

2. Used in electronics industry

In electronics manufacturing process, It is used as a base material for the manufacture of capacitors and resistors by evaporation method or spraying method. Also used as a drying agent for high density polyethylene films and high density polystyrene sheets because it is a very effective drying agent. Also used in semiconductor manufacturing process because it is a monomer for making silicon dioxide semiconductors

3. Used in the medical industry

It is used as a diagnostic agent. During the medical test, patient's urine, or blood is tested for presence of glucose. It is easily detected on a colorimeter and if present, it gives a red colored solution. But the concentration of the element in human body fluids must be within specified limits for it to be detected by the colorimeter .

4. Used in photographic industry

A chemical named benzidin sulfonic acid is made from toluene 2 5 diamine sulfate. This chemical can then be used by photographic film producers as developing agents. Materials like silver, gold and platinum can be coated on a photographic film by this developing agent.

5. Used In leather manufacturing industry

It is used in leather industry as a leather in tanning. Leather of toluene 2 5 diamine sulphate can be used in shoe making and other leather products like bags, briefcases, belts and necklaces. Also used as a foaming agent in finish dying process of animal skins.

6. Used in food industry

Used in pharmaceutical and food industries to mask unpleasant odors. It is also used to preserve food like cheese, milk, eggs and fish by adding it to the preservation process or using it as a coating over the foods after they have been preserved before packaging and sale.

Conclusion

Toluene 2 5 diamine sulphate has many industrial applications. It is a chemical with a wide range of uses in various industries like automotive, electronics, textile and photographic industry. The chemical is quite safe to be used in these industries without any adverse effects. This paper has been discussed about the chemical-properties, uses and it benefits. It has also been hinted about its toxicity and flammability.
