Bachem invests one million Swiss francs in emergency production of propofol
In response to rising demand caused by the new crown epidemic, Swiss pharmaceutical raw material supplier Bachem has started producing propofol 24/7.
Bachen, headquartered close to the city of Basel, Switzerland, said on May 25 that global demand for such anesthetics has skyrocketed. Therefore, the company urgently staffed the production line in the southern city of Vionnaz in the country and started production 24 hours a day, seven days a week, while investing in new equipment. According to Reuters news, Bachen announced the investment of 1 million Swiss francs to protect the supply of propofol.
During normal periods, short-acting propofol often provides intravenous anesthesia to patients for general anesthesia to restore sedation to mechanically ventilated patients who cannot breathe spontaneously. Since the outbreak of the new crown epidemic, tens of thousands of infected people require intensive care due to hydropneumonia, resulting in a rise in market demand for propofol, which has a history of 43 years.
