What You Need to Know About Benzene in Soda Pop
Benzene in soda pop is a concern many people have with carbonated beverages. When carbonated drinks began to be produced in the 1800s, benzene content in soda drinks wasn't a problem. Delicious carbonated refreshments were finally sold at soda fountains in pharmacy shops; according to some sources, the word "soda pop" first appeared.
Soda pops are nonalcoholic drinks that are typically but not always fizzy, contain a digestive acid, a synthetic or natural flavor, and occasionally juice. The first commercially available soft drinks combined lemon juice and water mixed with honey in the 1600s.
Paris saw the formation of the Compagnie de Limonadiers in 1676, which was given control over the distribution of its goods. They served lemonade from tanks that the merchants transported on their backs. It wasn't made fizzy until the 1760s when Jacob Schweppe.
Sales of soda pop in bottles expanded significantly at the beginning of the twentieth century. In the mid-twentieth century, soft drinks packaged in cans gained a significant market share. In contemporary times, big brands like Coca-Cola and Pepsi dominate the soda pop market.
Why Do People Like Soda Pop?
Dopamine is released in the brain due to the sugar in standard sodas, activating the brain's reward system. Some people find that their lifestyle habits cause their addiction more than the components themselves. Choosing soda with particular meals is common, especially when eating out or at a fast-food joint.
Causing an increase in appetite, soda pop and other sugary foods generate more dopamine than some other items. As a result, the brain craves more and more sweet foods to elicit a pleasurable reaction.
They also come in many flavors, from cola to any fruit you can imagine. Many people see them as the perfect drink to match with any meal. It is also very popular with children as most kids hate drinking drinks with no flavor.
None of the excellent soda pop ads we see daily highlight how bad it can be for our health if consumed daily or in excess. Who knew an innocent, sweet drink had so many adverse effects to hide?
Benzene in Soda Pop
In 1990, the FDA first learned that certain sodas contained benzene. At that period, the soft drink sector told the EPA that some drinks with benzoate salts and vitamin c could produce benzene at low concentrations.
In the CFSAN study, the FDA examined nearly two hundred soft drinks and other liquids. Ten different items contained levels of benzene over five ppb. Nine beverages with additional benzoate salts and vitamin c contained benzene levels exceeding five ppb.
In several soda pops, benzene has occasionally been found in small amounts. This is hypothesized due to a reaction between the antioxidant vitamin c and the additive sodium benzoate.
Soda pop comprising ascorbic acid and benzoic acid or its equivalents may also produce benzene. No public health concerns are associated with using soda pop that contains small amounts of benzene. The daily benzene consumption of a community is only slightly increased by food.
However, overexposure can cause anemia and adverse effects on the bone marrow and possibly reduce red blood cell production. Additionally, it can compromise immunity, which raises the risk of infection and can hemorrhage.
The excellent news is that benzene is typically removed from your body after forty-eight hours if the exposure wasn't much. In the bone tissue and liver, it is transformed into compounds known as metabolites in medicine. These compounds are responsible for some of the adverse effects of exposure to benzene.
How to Avoid Benzene in Soda Pop
Aside from avoiding drinks known to have benzene in them, one best advice would be to cut off soda from your diet or limit your consumption.
Soda is a very sugary drink; your body does not need it, nor does it properly process it. The extra sugar that your body doesn't need usually turns to fat deposits in your body when not used up as energy. Drinking soda pop daily causes many health issues like diabetes, obesity, etc.
By eliminating soda from your daily consumables and replacing it with water and fresh fruit juices, you are protecting your body by loading up with vitamins and hydration. Furthermore, doing so also lessens your consumption of benzene in soda pop.
